Philip attaches his name to the world famous Michel Rolland, explaining this French native from Bordeaux arrived in Mendoza in 1998 as a business partner with Rolland. At least, this is want is read on the back label. The story sounds great, and I use it all the time to sell his wine. The mystery is… that is where the story stops. I have yet to find any online reference to Philip Schell and even have tried to send an email to his address listed on the back label (which comes back as an error).
Either way, it’s a running joke whenever someone asks me for another glass of wine when I respond “Pshhhhhhhh” with a sarcastic look. And trust me, they keep asking for glass after glass. I don’t enjoy (if you can tell) Argentinean Malbec, but this one is certainly a crowd pleaser. I keep dreaming Philip is “running with passion his own project looking for the best “terroir” for Malbec… (via back label)” Yes, please find me some…. and tell me who you are!
The wine shows a clear medium purple color very typical of this style of wine. Smell lightly. Once you get over the burn of alcohol there’s lovely aromas of violet, plum, red cherry, black currant and a hint of black pepper. Clean, youthful and medium intense. Unfortunately that high alcohol (14.5%!) translates on the palate with the heat overwhelming the flavours but the higher body helps the mouthfeel. The palate is typical Argentina Malbec – medium acid, medium soft tannins with flavours of red currant and black cherry. Juicy and approachable.
